Have you ever seen a commercial or an ad promising free government grant money? According to these ads, the government and other organizations give away nearly one half a trillion dollars each year, and all you need to do is apply!

The ads go on to state that the money can be used for anything, including debt consolidation , student loans, a yacht or just about any frivolous thing you can imagine. All you need to do is call their toll free number, buy their book or enroll in their program and the details are soon on their way to you.A half a trillion dollars is certainly enticing, but are organizations really just giving money away for the asking?

Not exactly. Grants are certainly available from the Federal Government and elsewhere, but its not as though the money is just handed out for the asking. Grants are usually given by organizations interested in achieving specific goals.

If youre interested in bringing water to the desert, you might find an organization thats interested in global water distribution to aid you in your quest with a grant.

Its doubtful that youll find an organization thats interested in helping you pay off your Mastercard bill or funding your dream vacation home in Sun Valley.

Some of these organizations that advertise grant information are running scams, and theyre just out to take your money and run.

Others are fairly legitimate in that they will provide information to you for your fee, but the information they provide is readily available elsewhere for free If you are really interested in grant money, theres no reason to answer to the ads on TV promising free grant money. The term free grant money is a rather odd term, anyway, since the word grant means bestow its a gift, and if its a gift, then of course its free!

You can find out about grants from the Federal Government by visiting the official Government grant Website If you are in doubt about one of these organizations, it never hurts to check with your local Better Business Bureau.

USPTO partially confirms validity of Amazon “1-click patent”
October 31, 2017

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

Today, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued an office action, which confirmed the patentability of claims 6 to 10 of the Amazon 1-Click patent, US 5,960,411. The patent examiner, however, rejected claims 1 to 5 and 11 to 15. Amazon now has up to six months to amend the rejected claims to overcome the examiner’s rejection, provide arguments to demonstrate that the examiner is in error and/or provide evidence to demonstrate the patentability of their claims. During this period, the entire patent is still considered valid under US patent law.

The USPTO is reconsidering the patentability of the claims due to a request for reexamination filed by New Zealander Peter Calveley. Mr. Calveley used internet archives to show that defunct company Digi Cash used a similar technique prior to Amazon. Despite costing a substantial sum of cash and requiring donations to prepare and file the request for reexamination, Calveley said he did it as a game and hopes that his success inspires others to play the same game.

“One Click” shopping is an ecommerce technique, which allows a customer to purchase products via the Internet without repeatedly entering personal information such as name and address. At the time it was introduced it eased the frustration of on-line shopping.

Amazon filed the patent application for 1-click shopping in early 1997 and was granted the patent in September 1999. 23 days later Amazon sued rival Barnes & Noble for alleged infringement by its “Express Lane” ordering which was introduced in 1998. In December 1999 Amazon won an interim injunction against Barnes & Noble but the USA Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit lifted this injunction in February 2001. The parties then settled their dispute for undisclosed terms. Amazon has since successfully licensed the technique to other e-sellers such as Apple.

European Commission to investigate anti-competitive allegations against Google
October 31, 2017

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

The European Union’s executive body, the European Commission, has started investigating web search giant Google over anti-trust allegations by price comparison service Foundem and French legal services website At stake are allegations that Google’s AdWords results are manipulated to prioritise certain advertisers.

The complainants allege price comparison sites receive a lower ‘quality score’, thus being knocked out of fully automated, unpaid-for results; or, being required to pay more for advertising through the search giant’s AdWords program. Google rejects Foundem’s allegations, arguing the majority of content on price comparison sites is duplicated from other sites, asserting Foundem “duplicates 79% of its website content from other sites, thus adding no value.” The company line is, “[w]e have consistently informed webmasters that our algorithms disadvantage duplicate sites”.

The European Commission has a history of carrying out anti-trust investigations involving technology companies. Microsoft was ordered to pay substantial penalties for ‘bundling’ Windows with their Media Player; and, within the EU, must distribute a version of Windows that does not have said bundled software. A similar battle was fought over the automatic inclusion of Internet Explorer with their operating systems.

Google has previously been the subject of anti-trust allegations and investigations. United States authorities blocked Google from buying Yahoo!, citing concerns over a near-monopoly in search; Google’s purchase of mobile advertising company AdMob was also subject to anti-trust scrutiny by the US prior to being allowed to go ahead.

The emergence of beauty salons in the United States and elsewhere in the world brought with it an offering of comfort and style for a lot of women. Women flock to salons for pampering, although sometimes they simply just want to find relief after a stressful day. That is why for those who are thinking of putting up a business, a salon would be one of those at the top of their list. It’s one of those businesses that have a lower risk of failure, provided, of course, that it is run efficiently and smoothly.

Fiji joins the Non-Aligned Movement
October 30, 2017

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Fijian Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama announced Wednesday night that Fiji had joined the Non-Aligned Movement.

Bainimarama described this decision as way to refocus Fiji’s relationships away from its traditional trading partners of Australia and New Zealand, towards countries outside of the South Pacific. Joining the Non-Aligned Movement would support the “Look North policy which involves developing relationships with countries outside the southern Pacific sphere,” he said. The Fijian Cabinet of Ministers had agreed to start the process of becoming a member of the Non-Aligned Movement in late February.

The Non-Aligned Movement is an organisation of states that consider themselves to be in a position of neutrality towards the major powers and the associated power blocs. The stated purpose of the organisation according to the Havana Declaration of 1979 is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries” in their “struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics.”

Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, stated that today’s Non-Aligned Movement “has adopted the broader principles of multilateralism, equality and mutual non-aggression and has morphed into a tool for strengthening leverage when negotiating with the developed world.” As of the 2009 conference, there were 118 member countries and 17 observer countries representing almost two-third of the United Nations member nations and over half of the world population.

This decision came shortly after a meeting with Mohammed Omar Abdulla the undersecretary of the Department of Economic Development for Abu Dhabi. Bainimarama was in Abu Dhabi along with the leaders of several other small pacific island states for a summit with the Arab League entitled “Prospects for Cooperation between the Arab world and the Pacific Islands.”

Fiji has been looking for trade partnerships with non-traditional partners such as China and India, due to trade sanctions imposed by Fiji’s traditional trading partners Australian and New Zealand following the 2006 coup.

Google News seeks patent for search system that returns ‘quality’ links

Google News seeks patent for search system that returns ‘quality’ links
October 30, 2017

Tuesday, May 10, 2005

Google News submitted patent applications both in the United States and world-wide in September 2003 for a system of ranking search returns. The patent protection filings seek to control Google’s approach that filters headlines through a complicated algorithm, including the quality of the news organization. How much of this system is currently in use by the search engine giant is unknown.

Primitive search engines are expected to organically evaluate links based on how closely the keywords typed in the search field match an object link, and how many other links are attached to the object. Then a measure of relevance is calculated before returning a reply.

It seems some measure of the work being done at Google is a reaction to search engine optimization (SEO) campaigns which can, if done effectively, skew results to certain domains. A challenge for Google is to develop its technology to nullify efforts on the dark side of SEO and link-spamming.

What also seems to be coming out from this, according to research from the Internet Search Engine Database, is that Google does indeed have a ‘sandbox’ where domains are evaluated first by a human factor before being released into its algorithms.

In its first ever Securities and Exchange Commission filing since the company went public last year, Google indicated that it intends to spend US$500 million on technology development, more than double the $177 million it spent two years ago.

The language used in the lengthy patent application itself is difficult to understand. An excellent article titled “Google United – Google Patent Examined” found below, describes some of the nuts and bolts of Google’s techniques.

Entertaining Easter Ideas for Assisted Living Facilities

Melissa Peterman

There are a lot of different circumstances that must be taken into consideration when it comes to activities within nursing homes and assisted living facilities.Meaning, your activity must be able to appeal to almost every person within a nursing home- meaning, people with disabilities, age level and religious, ethical and political preferences. Here are six great ways to get everyone involved this Easter while making sure that most everyone in the assisted living facility is able to participate.

Spring Time Easter Tea Party

Nothing says Easter like a big Easter hat and white gloves. The other thing that a big white hat and gloves scream is a traditional English tea party, especially one in a spring garden, just in time for Easter. Since an English style spring time Easter party offers a brief escape for every age, mobility and even mental ability to enjoy it, it makes it a perfect activity for an assisted living facility. All you need are tablecloths, a couple tea pots, some tea sandwiches and small cookies and you are set.

Easter Basket Decorating

YouTube Preview Image

Its likely that many residents living in your assisted living facilities grew up with Easter baskets. Offer an open class on Easter basket decorating for residents to either give away to their grandchildren, donate or keep for themselves. Ask if a local craft store would host a basket decorating class, charging only for supplies or ask if an art student wouldnt mind donating their time to offer friendly help and suggestions.

Egg Decorating

The ultimate classic Easter activity that is open to everyone! Boil several dozen eggs, create a food grade dye from several Easter egg dying kits and make an announcement one week that there will be an Easter egg dying activity in the main activity area. Lay newspaper over several circular tables and invite everyone who wishes to color and dye eggs. The best part about this is making deviled eggs for lunch the next day!

Easter Parade Movie Night

This fun musical for Baby Boomers is an Irving Berlin classic. Seniors who appreciate old black and white romance will love this movie. Serve lemonade and popcorn and project it onto a big screen. Charge a nickel admission for some added nostalgia.

Spring Cleaning For Charity

Active seniors like to be kept busy. What better way to appreciate their skills than to help raise money for a local charity. Invite every active assisted living senior to help organize a local fundraising yard sale. Hang flyers in local neighborhoods suggesting community-wide spring closet cleaning and offering to collect items for a sale benefiting a local charity. Send church members or other volunteers with trucks to gather the goods and hold the sale in the assisted living parking lot. To offer a thank you to the local church volunteers, offer to place a card with Easter service times in each bag of goods you sell.

If you work in an assisted living facility, dont let Easter or spring for that matter come whipping through without paying any attention to it. What ever your religion, make it a celebration!

Donald Trump elected US president

Donald Trump elected US president
October 29, 2017

Friday, November 11, 2016

On Tuesday, Republican Donald Trump won the 2016 United States presidential election. Republicans also kept control of both houses of Congress. Trump is to take the presidential oath in January.

Trump won at least 290 electoral votes, while Clinton won 228, according to the AP (Associated Press) — 270 were required vote to win the election — though Clinton won more national popular votes, 47.7% compared to Trump’s 47.4%. Trump won the crucial electoral votes of Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. The electors of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin had not supported a Republican presidential nominee for more than a quarter century, but in this election between them they provided Trump 30 electoral votes.

According to law, the citizens vote for an elector in the state who promises to vote for a particular candidate. In most states, the candidate who wins most votes in a state wins all electors of the state. Different states have varying numbers of electors, which depend on the state’s population. Since there are 538 electors in the US, one needs to win an absolute majority of the electors, that is, at least 270. Due to the electoral college, a candidate can win the presidential election even if he/she receives lesser national popular vote.

In her concession speech on Wednesday, Hillary Clinton said, “We owe him [Donald Trump] an open mind and a chance to lead.” Clinton also said, “We’ve spent a year and a half, bringing together millions of people from every corner of our country to say with one voice that We believe that the American Dream is big enough for everyone, for people of all races and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for LGBT people, and people with disabilities; for everyone.”

President Barack Obama had called Trump “uniquely unqualified” during the election campaign, but, after the president-elect victory of Trump, Obama met him in the White House yesterday and said, “My number one priority in the coming two months is to try to facilitate a transition that ensures our president-elect is successful.” After the meeting, Trump tweeted, “A fantastic day in D.C. Met with President Obama for first time. Really good meeting, great chemistry. Melania liked Mrs. O [Michelle Obama] a lot!”

Following the unexpected result of the election, people protested in various US cities, often chanting “Not my president”. On Wednesday, more than 60 people were arrested in New York, and a crowd blocked the entrance of Chicago’s Trump Tower. Lily Morton, a 17-year-old student protester, said yesterday, “This generation deserves better than Donald Trump […] The queer people, colored people, women, girls, everyone that is going to be affected by this, we need to protest to help them. There is still love in this country.”

During the voting, huge traffic on the Canadian immigration website resulted in a site crash, officials said. Justin Trudeau tweeted, “I’ve just spoken with President-elect Trump – and we agreed to meet soon to keep building the Canada-US relationship.” ((fr)) French language: Je viens de parler au président élu Trump; nous avons convenu de nous rencontrer bientôt pour continuer à bâtir la relation Canada-É. U.

Last year, after the Paris attack in November, Trump commented on Muslims saying, “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.” He also said, “our country can not be the victim of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad.” But after winning the president-elect, the statement on Trump’s website was removed, and it redirected to the donation page.

Trump partisans defended Trump saying those proposed actions were to insure safety rather than targeting any religion. Though the statement disappeared from the web site, various defences of it are still there.

Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto congratulated Donald Trump and tweeted, “I congratulate the US on its electoral process and reiterate to @realDonaldTrump [Donald Trump] our willingness to work together for our bilateral relationship.” ((es)) Spanish language: Felicito a EUA por su proceso electoral y le reitero a @realDonaldTrump [Donald Trump] la disposición de trabajar juntos en favor de la relación bilateral. . Mexican currency, the peso, dropped 13% in value as Trump won. Trump had proposed to abandon the trilateral US–Mexico–Canada NAFTA agreement (North American Free Trade Agreement) and to build a wall at the US–Mexico border. Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu said Mexico would not pay for this wall.

Previously in 2016, Mexico reinforced the peso three times by increasing its benchmark interest rate.

70-year-old Donald Trump will be the oldest US president to first enter the office. No woman has ever been the US president.
